Elsword Online is an action / fantasy MMORPG with an anime art style from developer KOG studios; the game is based in the world of Elrios where the world owes its life to the powerful El Stone. The story is set during a time where the El Stone has been stolen and it is up to the player to reclaim the El Stone and bring the thieves to justice.
The world of Elsword Online is separated into eight regions and the story is told around the dungeons that can be located in each region; each character also has their own story which unfolds as they level up and progress through the game.
There are a variety of characters available for the user to play as including main character, Elsword, however the player can also play as one of his friends or companions in the group. Each of the characters have their own backstories, relationships with other characters, skills and abilities which make them unique. This does somewhat limit customization however as each character already has their own goals, appearances and personalities.
Each character is a specific class and their skills can be customized to suit the player; their abilities will change depending on their job which will grant them different roles on the battlefield, for example Elsword can be specialized in swordsmanship or he can combine swords with magic. It does allow for quite a few playstyles for each character which can make up for their lack of customization in other areas.
It uses a point and click system for combat which works well for the side-scrolling MMORPG; the player must kill any enemy they are presented with in order to progress through the game. Characters have a mix of weapons and abilities they can use in fights, there are also passive abilities which give them specific bonuses.
Players can form parties and Guilds to explore the world with and fight together for experience points and loot; in addition to the PvE content, there are also PvP zones where players can battle it out in groups or duel with each other in 1v1 battles. There is even an option for “survival” PvP battles where there are no teams, these games are all-out deathmatches with up to eight participants at once.
The anime graphics style looks clean and can be cute at times, it combines with the action of battles well. Soundtrack wise, the game has a nice soundtrack which is pleasant to listen to while playing.
Elsword Online is a somewhat unique side-scrolling MMORPG and uses an interesting mix of a single player experience with a MMO; taking the role of a character, the player must progress through the game with the overall MMO storyline and also a personal story. The playstyle diversity is a nice touch especially considering the lack of character customization however there are many characters to choose from. The PvP system is small and limited but it does include everything that is needed to make it viable.
